Tips for Test-Driving a Pre-Owned Vehicle

Tips for Test-Driving a Pre-Owned Vehicle

When test-driving any vehicle that you're considering purchasing, you should come in with a list of things you'd like to check and evaluate before, during, and after the test drive. When test-driving a pre-owned vehicle, these checks are all the more important, as they will help you determine whether the vehicle is performing well and will meet your needs. Here are a few tried and true tips for test-driving a pre-owned vehicle, allowing you to feel confident in whatever decision you make.

Don't let your own preferences cloud your judgment: Sure, you may have always wanted a certain model, but that doesn't mean that any pre-owned version of that vehicle will be the car for you. Try to remain objective while evaluating your options and don't compromise on critical component parts or on your needs.

Take more than one vehicle for a test drive: The best way you'll be able to evaluate different vehicles is to test-drive as many as possible. That way, you'll be able to compare the different driving experiences to each other, and decide which features are most important to you.

Pre-test evaluation: Before getting behind the wheel, you should perform a few general checks of the vehicle. Consider checking the oil and other fluid levels, tire pressure, tire treads (including for uneven wear between tires), the windshield for chips/cracks, and look to see if there are any wet spots on the pavement under the car, which potentially indicates a leak. While checking under the hood, be alert for any signs of wear or odor.

Take notes for reference: Have a chart that clearly states the things that are most important to you in a vehicle, such as ride and steering feel, exterior/interior wear, comfort, and the infotainment/sound system. You will also want to check things like the heating and cooling system while taking the vehicle for a test drive. This chart will allow you to consider the pros and cons of whatever vehicles you test-drive.

Perform similar tests for each vehicle and routine driving patterns: Try to test-drive each vehicle in a similar way - like how it drives on streets vs. highways, and how well it accelerates and brakes. Try to drive naturally, as this will let you know how the vehicle will typically feel to you when performing your routine driving.

Consider the opinions of others: If you're serious about a vehicle, consider having someone you trust test-drive the vehicle as well and let you know what they think. If you're satisfied with both evaluations, have a mechanic inspect and test-drive the vehicle. Although this comes at a cost, it's a worthwhile investment to help you feel confident in your purchase.
